What causes Eye Bags

Eye bags can be caused by a variety of factors including aging, which leads to skin and muscle weakening around the eyes, fluid retention, especially upon waking or after a salty meal, and lack of sleep, contributing to puffiness and swelling. Genetics also play a role, making some more prone to developing eye bags.

Common Causes of Eye Bags

Aging
Skin and muscle weakening around the eyes.

Fluid Retention
Swelling due to water buildup, often influenced by diet or sleep patterns.

Lack of Sleep
Puffiness and dark circles due to poor sleep quality or quantity.

Genetics
Inherited traits that make one more prone to developing eye bags.

What is Eyebag Removal

Eye bags are caused by weakening of the tissues supporting the fat around the eye. This weakness may be present at an early age or it can develop as you get older. When the fat bulges out over the orbital bone, it creates the bulge known as an eye bag. Older patients may have excess skin under the eyes as well. The surgery to treat these problems is called ‘lower blepharoplasty’.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Eye bag Removal Surgery

There can be different bulges under the eye that make you look younger or older. A bulge within 5mm of your lower eyelid is considered youthful and attractive, this is associated with a smooth check contour immediately beneath it. If the bulge extends further down to your bony orbit, you most likely have eye bags and would benefit from corrective surgery.

Eye Bag Removal techniques at Covette Clinic

At Covette Clinic, we use 2 methods of eye bag removal namely Scarless Eye Bag Removal or Incisional Eye Bag Removal technique.

Eye Bag Removal using Scarless Technique

Plastic surgeons use a scarless method to remove eyebags by working through the inside of the eyelid, avoiding any visible scars. This simpler and less invasive technique smooths the under-eye area, speeds up recovery, and avoids the scars typical of older methods. It’s a great option for anyone wanting to look younger and refreshed without the hassle of a long recovery.

Suitable for: mild to moderate eye bags, with no excessive skin under the eye area.

Is Scarless Eye Bag Removal Surgery Painful?

Dr Gavin Kang, our plastic surgeon with over 18 years of experience and over 2,000 successful eye bag surgeries under his belt, removes excess fats through a tiny incision in the inner part of the lower eyelids. It does not leave any visible scars on the exterior.

The scarless technique is suitable for people with mild to moderate eye bags, and have no excessive skin under the eye area.

Alternative For More Complex Eye Bags - The Incisional Technique

The scarless technique is suitable for people with mild to moderate eye bags, and have no excessive skin under the eye area.

For patients with moderate eye bags, and have excess lax lower lid skin, Dr Kang would perform the incisional technique, which is also known as lower blepharoplasty.

Eye Bag Removal Surgery FAQs

Who is an ideal candidate for Eye Bag surgery?

There can be different bulges under the eye that make you look younger or older. A bulge within 5mm of your lower eyelid is considered youthful and attractive, this is associated with a smooth check contour immediately beneath it. If the bulge extends further down to your bony orbit, you most likely have eye bags and would benefit from corrective surgery.

What is the best method to remove eye bags?

The best method will depend on what is troubling you. If you are relatively young and do not have a lot of excess skin to remove, a scarless technique would be appropriate. Even if you need to remove skin, the end result is essentially scarless as the scar is hidden in the lash line. Whether the fat is removed or redistributed will be decide by your surgeon.

What are the potential risks?

There is a small risk of infection and bleeding with any surgical procedure. The lower eyelid can be pulled to a lower position, this complication is usually temporary, but if it persists, revision surgery may be necessary.

I’ve had eye bag removal before, can I still improve my condition?

If you’ve had surgery before, but are still dissatisfied with your appearance, there are still procedures that can be done to improve your appearance. Possible treatments include revision surgery or fat grafting.

I have a lot of excess skin under my eyes, can I have scarless blepharoplasty?

If you have excess skin that needs to be removed, it would be best to place an incision just under the lash line to remove the skin.

Will I be awake during surgery?

The procedure will be done while you are awake, under local anaesthesia.

Can I open my eyes after surgery?

You will experience some swelling, but you will be able to open your eyes.

When can I wear makeup?

You shouldn’t apply eye makeup for 2 weeks after the procedure.
